Over 150 houses in Villa de Río and Cañete de las Torres in Córdoba had to be evacuated during heavy rains and flooding which also claimed the life of an elderly woman.
The deluge began at 17:30 on Wednesday afternoon and some homes were soon under two metres of water. Firemen are busy bailing water to prevent structures from collapsing, clearing debris and trying to unblock drainage and sewage systems where mud up to 40 cm thick has accumulated.
One elderly woman in her eighties died when she was swept away by the flood waters at a farm near Cañete. Her body was found about one and a half kilometres from her home.
