A total of fifteen people have so far been arrested in connection with ‘Operación Damas’, an investigating into human trafficking for the purposes of prostitution being carried out by a network of Rumanian criminals.
The scenario is an all too familiar one, women being recruited abroad with the promise of lucrative, legal work in Spain, only to find themselves heavily in permanent debt and being forced to work as prostitutes to repay the monies.
The arrests took place in San Roque (Cádiz), Sabinillas, Estepona and Gijón. The investigation into the activities of this network began in December 2010 after police received an official complaint from one of the women involved. There was then a long period of surveillance, monitoring and identification of possible victims before the raids were carried out.
