Nerja has, for the second year running, notched up four EU ‘Blue Flags’ for its beaches, only being surpassed by Roquetas (Almeria) with six and Puerto de Santa María (Cádiz) with five.
The Councillor for beaches, Jonathan Méndez, stated that it is not easy (??) to obtain the Blue Flag and even more difficult to maintain it. The Councillor is hoping that more beaches in Nerja, namely El Chucho, Calahonda and El Salon, can achieve Blue Flag status next year.

I think Nerja should be awarded a few brown flags.
…or maybe the blue flag organisation actually enjoy swimming with the little brown fishes.
Larna says:
Blue flags, brown slicks.
Raw sewage discharged into the sea, and a large summer population.
No imminent sewage treatment plant.
How would you be refused a blue flag?
Beetzme says:
I have just emailed the Blue Flag organisation asking how the Blue Flags could have been awarded to Nerja, given the sewage discharge into the sea.
Will let you know their reply, if any!
