The man suspected of starting the forest fire on the island of Ibiza has been remanded in custody without the possibility of bail.
The man, a 50 year old Argentine national, has been charged with arson by negligence and could face further charges of endangering lives in a protected area.
The fire is thought to have started when the man approached some beehives with a smoke device, dropping one of the coals which then started the blaze. The fire is now ‘stable’ but has destroyed about 1,500 hectares of pine forest, around 2.5% of the total area of Ibiza.
The detainee, if convicted, could face between 7 and 10 years in prison.
