The Alhambra Palace and Generalife Gardens in Granada has become the first monument in Spain to offer a free service for deaf people through a touch-screen iPod that plays video with an explanation in sign language and with Spanish subtitles.
The objective of this initiative, driven by an agreement between the Ministry of Culture and the Orange Foundation, is to facilitate equal access for people with hearing difficulties, which is more than half a million people in Spain.
The portable device will be obtainable at the entrance to the monument.
To date, the Orange Foundation has implemented similar services at the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía, the Museo Nacional de Arte Romano in Mérida, the Museo Thyssen-Bornemizsa, the Museo Nacional y Centro de Investigación in Altamira and the Museu Nacional d’Art de Catalunya, although the Alhambra is the first monument to have this service.
