Bathing has been temporarily prohibited on two sections of beach near the port in Málaga due to a possible discharge of untreated waste water.
The Health Department of the Junta de Andalucia carries out tests on the waters in Málaga province every two weeks to ensure that they are suitable for bathing. Samples taken on Monday, the results of which were available on Thursday, showed contamination on two sections of beach.
The samples contained 6,000 units of two types of organisms per 100 mililitres of water, the normal level being 100 to 200 units. As a result, the beach was temporarily closed.
The affected area is one hundred metres to the left and right of the Club Mediterráneo in Huelin. Two hypotheses are being put forward as to the cause of the problem, one being a problem with rain water in the sewage system and another being a possible discharge of waste from a ship.
