Whereas the bulbs I tend to buy explode in spectacular fashion after about one month, there is a light bulb in Fire Station 6 in Livermore, California, that was first switched on in 1901 and since then, with the exception of a brief period in 1903, a week or so in 1937 and the odd power outages, has been permanently shedding light on proceedings.
For the past 35 years or so it has been connected to an emergency generator system that keeps the department’s emergency radios running at all times, so no more problems in the event of a blackout.
It is now known as the Centennial Bulb and there is even a Bulbcam.
