Guardia Civil officers in Pilas, Sevilla, have arrested two brothers on suspicion of theft and fraud, the victim being an elderly man who was supposedly being looked after by one of them.
A few days ago, a local resident called the police to say that he believed that his 79 year old uncle, who lived alone in Carrión de los Céspedes, was being robbed and he gave details of who he thought was responsible for the thefts.
The story began when the uncle, who was still working, began to suffer from poor health and the nephew arranged for the son of a friend to help his uncle. The uncle’s health eventually worsened and he was admitted to hospital in a coma.
The so-called ‘helper’ took some of the old man’s personal effects to the hospital, including his wallet and keys. The nephew noticed that a credit card was missing from the wallet and asked the helper about it, to which he got the answer that his uncle had given it to him and authorised him to use it.
Suspicions aroused, the nephew went to his uncle’s house and discovered that the safe containing jewels valued at around €5,000 was missing, as was around €600 in cash. The nephew then reported this to the Guardia Civil and an investigation was started.
It soon transpired that the helper had withdrawn varying amounts from the credit card and it became apparent that both the helper and his brother, residents of Bormujos, were involved in events.
The two brothers have been charged with theft and fraud through the misuse of a credit card.
