Guardia Civil officers seized 700 kilos of hashish after chasing two light aircraft across part of Andalucia.
The operation began on Wednesday when two light aircraft were detected heading from Medina Sidonia, Cádiz province, to Morocco. The aircraft were not showing lights and no flight plan had been filed.
On Thursday, the two aircraft returned to Almeria where, realising they had been detected, began evasive manoeuvres. One of the planes landed at Tabernas for a few minutes to offload some of its cargo while the second plane distracted a pursuing Guardia Civil helicopter.
Guardia Civil officers on the ground arrested three people in Tabernas and confiscated five bales of hashish.
At around 14:00, the second aircraft, being chased by a Guardia Civil helicopter, landed near Ronda. The pilot was arrested and 194 kilos of hashish was seized.
Meanwhile, the plane which had earlier landed momentarily near Tabernas soon landed at Loja, in Granada province, where Guardia Civil ground forces proceeded to arrest the pilot.
The detainees are two Bulgarians, one Spaniard, one Norwegian and one Moroccan.
