An Emperor penguin has turned up on Peka Peka beach in New Zealand, 4,000 miles from its home, after presumably taking a wrong turn and getting lost while hunting for fish. It certainly does look baffled by its surroundings.
It is not a unique case, but certainly rare, with the last reported similar incident being in 1967 on Southland’s Oreti Beach.
The penguin is thought to be about ten months old and although it is apparently healthy and in relatively good spirits, it will need to find its way home if it is to survive. Maybe someone will give it a lift.
