Full Tilt Poker, an American-run online gambling site registered on the Channel Island of Alderney, has been closed down by the authorities on the island.
The US began an investigation into money laundering, illegal gambling and bank fraud last April and eleven people, among them the founders of Full Tilt Poker, have been charged.
In 2006, American authorities tried to crack down on the practice and the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act was introduced to try to control the industry and halt money transfers to online gaming sites.
As a result, several big poker sites became worried about the new law and pulled out of America. PokerStars is now based on the Isle of Man and Absolute Poker is based in Canada.
