A 55 year old woman has been murdered and her daughter is in hospital after they were attacked and stabbed by the woman’s former partner in Hernani, Guipuzcoa.
The incident occurred at 05:30 on Sunday morning in calle Urbieta. Rosario Román de la Fuente and her daughter, 30 year old Yolanda Sánchez Román, had been trying for half an hour to get a taxi but without luck. They decided to wait a while at the home of a friend where they saw the alleged killer asleep on a sofa.
The two women returned to the street to continue trying to get a taxi when they were attacked and stabbed. Another person, who tried to intervene during the attack, suffered a slight injury to one arm. Suspicion fell on the former partner and on Sunday afternoon police persuaded him to surrender and he was arrested.
There was no restraining order in force but the alleged killer, an Ecuadorian national, but he had been the subject of an investigation in 2007 relating to violent abuse. However, in the absence of further incidents, the case had been filed. About six weeks ago, Rosario Román had complained to the police that her former partner had insulted her and the case was reopened.
A search of the immediate area resulted in the discovery of a knife, possibly the murder weapon. Yolanda Sánchez Román is in hospital where her injuries have been descibed as non life-threatening.
