Today sees the start of a DGT crackdown on drinking and driving with 20,000 breath tests being carried out each day.
The latest campaign will continue until next Sunday. There will be around 1,000 checkpoints and members of the Federation for Spinal Injuries (ASPAYM) will be at checkpoints to impress upon people the potential consequences of drinking and driving.
In 2010, the same campaign carried out by the DGT resulted in 102,000 positive breath tests and proceedings were instigated against 16,000 drivers.
According to the National Institute for Toxicology and Forensic Sciences, around 42% of drivers killed in road accidents in Spain during 2010 tested positive for alcohol or drugs.
