The Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries in Málaga has ordered the closure of the nine mollusc fisheries in the province due to the phenomenon known as ‘red tide’.
The ‘red tide’ only affects bivalve molluscs, so other fisheries are not affected. It will take two negative test results in the fisheries before the fishing ban is lifted.
Compensation is available to fishermen affected by the ban after a period of 21 days of unemployment. The compensation is around €100 per business day for fishing companies and €40 for fishermen. There are about 90 boats involved in mollusc fishing in the province.
