The National Police have arrested six people from the same family who were enticing fellow Rumanians to Spain with offers of lucrative employment and then exploiting them and keeping them in intolerable conditions.
Eight of the victims escaped and walked for six and a half hours to Sevilla to report their situation and another five were released by the police.
The victims were recruited in Rumania with promises of work and then taken by bus to Sevilla. From there they were transferred to a farm in Cantillana where they were kept in accommodation without light, electricity or running water.
Not only were the victims held in appalling conditions, they were not paid and built up further debts to the family through being charged for food, accommodation and fuel for taking them to work.
Threats and beatings were also a regular part of daily life for the victims, one being so badly beaten that he suffered multiple fractures and a head wound.
The detainees have been charged with human trafficking for laboral exploitation, illegal detention, coercion, threatening behaviour and causing injuries.
