Guardia Civil divers have recovered the body of a 3 year old boy from the marshy area leading to a beach in the coastal resort of Mazarrón, Murcia. Earlier, his 6 year old sister had died despite being rescued from the water.
The two children, Italian nationals, had been camping with their parents near Playa Grande in the coastal resort of Mazarrón. It is thought that the two children had been playing and had perhaps gone to retrieve a ball from a reedy area and had fallen in the water.
Swimmers in the area rescued the 6 year old girl but despite resuscitation efforts by medical staff who had been called to the scene.
After she had been rescued, still alive, her parents then noticed that another of their children was missing, the 3 year old boy having gone off to play with his sister.
The area around Playa Grande does not have lifeguards as it is not an officially recognised or designated bathing area.
