The new PP government in Vélez-Málaga is considering whether or not to proceed with the planned construction of an indoor swimming pool in Torre del Mar, a €3.2 million project, in view of the precarious financial situation within the municipality.
The Council is more than €100 million in debt, has suffered several power cuts as a result of non-payment of bills and has lost numerous grants as a result of not implementing projects within the due period due to the poor state of the municipal coffers.
The PP government is considering whether it is more appropriate to spend the money on other, equally worthwhile but more pressing, projects.
The swimming pool contract was put out to tender by EMVIPSA for €3,451,000 and was awarded in January to the joint venture company Proacon/Civesa in the amount of €3.244.000.The Andalucian Ministry of Trade, Tourism and Sports is providing €1,200,000 and the Council is supposed to find the remaining €2,251,000.
The Ministry of Trade, Tourism and Commerce has given the Council until September 19th to start work on the project otherwise the grant will be rescinded.
