Google has updated its map of London to provide live public transport information and directions, and the mobile version of the new service can also detect users’ locations and direct them to the nearest tube station or bus stop. The Google Maps app for Android smartphones will also alert users when they should get off their bus or train.
The service uses Transport for London’s open data platform, which allows developers direct access to data on public transport in the capital, including up-to-date details of roadworks and tube suspensions, information which has been freely available since last June.
Transport for London already provides a London transport planner on its own website but it is not as eay to use or integrated with mapping.
Google also recently added 3D models of buildings to its map of central London.
A similar system operates in New York for the subway system.
