The DGT is proposing to change the speed limit on all conventional single lane roads from the current 100 kph to 90 kph.
Currently, all conventional roads with a single lane in each direction and a hard shoulder of 1.5 metres have a speed limit of 100 kph, those with a lesser shoulder are 90 kph. Under the new proposal, the new limit would bring all these conventional roads in line.
The proposal is designed to reduce the number of accidents on secondary roads and to bring Spain into line with most other European countries who generally have a 90 kph limit.
There are no plans to change the speed limit on motorways. The proposal could even come into force before the end of the current legislature with the reform of the Traffic Regulations in a similar manner to the recent temporary 110 kph speed limit on motorways.
