Around 500 people, residents and tourists, in the Punta Paloma of Tarifa, Cádiz province, were cut off yesterday as sand from the Valdevaqueros dune blocked the main road.
Access to Paloma Baja and much of Punta Paloma was cut and twenty cars were buried as sand covered the CA 2325.
The sand dune is apparently slowly moving westward and the Council has asked the Department of Coasts to come up with a plan to halt the progress of the dune and to prevent the CA 2325 from being blocked in the future.
The Council can do little for local residents except provide some emergency assistance, the problem of the dune being the responsibility of the Ministry of Environment and the Ministry of Public Works and Services.
