Raw sewage was reported as having spilled onto playa Mazagón in the municipality of Palos de la Frontera, Huelva, on Saturday morning, local residents complaining that the authorities do nothing to prevent such incidents.
A local resident filmed the spill on her mobile phone and the water company Aqualia was informed about the incident.
The residual waters apparently leaked via two manholes along the route of the pipe leading to the treatment plant and is the result of a faulty pump. The pump was damaged in storms two years ago and subsequent repair work does not appear to have solved the problem.
Residents are reported as saying that spillages are a regular occurrence, the last ones being on August 2nd and 3rd 2011.
The Council sent out a bulldozer to spread sand over the affected area. Residents, however, complain that such action contributes to the loss of sand on the beach as the fecal matter drags the sand out to sea. This is in addition to the pollution element with such discharges.
