The first meeting of the ‘big two’ in the first leg of the Spanish Supercup ended in a 2-2 draw.
Real Madrid took the lead through Özil with just 13 minutes on the clock and such was their domination that they looked as though they were going to run away with the match.
However, ten minutes before the break, and against the run of play, David Villa cracked in a shot from left of goal and the scores were level. Then, almost on the stroke of half time, Lionel Messi, who had been very subdued until this point, weaved his way past several defenders to put Barcelona into the lead.
Real Madrid equalised shortly after the restart, courtesy of Xabi Alonso, and had several more good chances at goal but Barcelona managed to keep them at bay and it ended in 2-2 draw.
Real Madrid began the match as favourites, but it is now Barcelona who have the advantage for the second leg on Wednesday.
