The beautification of Mijas is apparently one of the prime objectives of the new municipal government and to this end they are intending to progressively dispense with the traditional daily house to house rubbish collections.
The ‘problem’ of rubbish bags being left out on the kerb each night is mainly, although not exclusively, related to Mijas Pueblo. Narrow streets, pedestrianised areas, bags being broken open by dogs and general aesthetics are all reasons why the Council has decided upon a new approach, although the change will be progressive.
This is borne out by the fact that the cleaning concessionaire has purchased some new equipment, including vehicles capable of negotiating the narrow streets and operating in tight areas.
However, the intention is to do away with the old bagging system and ideas currently being discussed are to increase the existing number of containers as well as to construct more of the so-called ecological islands, fixed collection points. Discussions are also in progress to try and develop a collection plan that is feasible and beneficial to the local residents.
