Residents in urbanisation Don Miguel in La Cala del Moral, Rincón de la Victoria, took to the streets yesterday to protest about a mobile phone antenna installed on one of the buildings.
The protesters say that the antenna, installed by Telefonica-Movistar, initially looked like a chimney as it was heavily camouflaged but an employee of Telefonica later blew the whistle and told them exactly what it was.
The protesters say that the antenna is illegal and unauthorised and they are concerned about possible health hazards. They complain that the phone companies erect such antenna knowing that any action to have them removed will take years and by that time the antenna has been financially written off.
The Councillor for Urban Development, Antonio Manuel Rando, has stated that from the day they took over control of the Council they have been trying to have the antenna removed. He said that they have even recently asked Endesa to cut the electricity supply to the antenna but, with administrative procedures being slow and August being a month when it is almost impossible to get anything done in Spain, this has not happened.
