A forest fire which began on Wednesday evening in the Fernán Pérez area of Níjar, Almeria, is now under control after firefighters worked through the night to extinguish the blaze.
The fire began at 18:15 and at 22:00 was declared a ‘level 1’ incident and there were fears that it could reach the Las Hortichuelas residential area. However, by 02:50 the blaze was stabilised and its advance halted and by 04:00 it was brought under control.
Over 80 technicians, eight aircraft and other resources were involved in tackling the fire. The Bureau of Investigation of Forest Fires (BIIF) are now investigating the cause of the fire. A number of units are still monitoring the area in case the fire reignites.
