A total of 321 people died on the roads in Spain during July and August, 41 fewer than in the same period in 2010 and the lowest number since 1962.
In July there were 172 fatalities, 2 less than in 2010 and in August there were 149 deaths, 39 fewer than in 2010.
The figure was the lowest since 1962 when 340 people were killed during July and August. On the positive side, however, there were only 1.5 million cars on the road in 1962 compared to 32 million today.
On the other hand, it could be argued that fifty years of road safety improvements, education campaigns, speed traps and improvements to roads and vehicles has only resulted in reducing the death toll by 5.6%.
