August may be the peak tourist month of the year but unemployment is still rising, up by 10,954 in Andalucia and with the national total now standing at over 4.1million.
In Málaga province, 1,308 people joined the ranks of the unemployed during August to bring the total out of work to 175,289.
The construction and tourist sectors were both fairly equally affected. The Unions claim that many construction companies reduce their staffing levels in August to avoid having to pay holiday money.
The Unions also bemoan the fact that in Málaga province, of 40,088 contracts signed during August, only 1,877 (4.6%) were permanent.
Historically, unemployment always rises in August and the positive spin on the situation from the government is that this year’s rise is the lowest since 2006. That should give comfort to the 4,133,927 people now without work.
