Around 200 people have so far been evacuated from their homes in Mijas as a fire rages uncontrolled in an area of thick vegetation, the flames quickly advancing towards Ojén and Marbella.
The fire began on Sunday night in the paraje de Entrerríos-Fuente Téjar in the Sierra de Mijas, an area of thick vegetation, and winds of up to 40 kph have fanned the flames. Firefighters from all over Málaga province as well as reinforcements from Cádiz and Granada provinces have joined the effort to control the blaze, the worst of this summer and possibly the worst in living memory.
Weather conditions and poor visibility during the night prevented the use of air support but this morning a total of 17 aircraft have so far been deployed.
A number of houses have already been affected by the flames and several urbanisations are under threat.
