At 10:30 today, Wednesday, the agrarian association ASAJA will be giving away 5,000 kilos of table olives in Sevilla as a protest against prices and the general state of the industry.
ASAJA will give out the olives at 10:30 on the esplanade behind Edificio Sevilla 2 in the capital.
ASAJA say that domestic consumption of table olives has fallen by 16% and that the industry needs restructuring if it is to survive. Spain is the world’s largest producer of table olives and Sevilla, with 250,000 tons, is the major provincial producer and 20,000 families are directly dependent on this sector of the industry.
Farmers complain that while prices have remained virtually the same for the past fifteen years, production costs have risen by around seventy percent.
