Interesting to note the decrease in cars towed, people busted for no crash helmet etc, during the summer months, and even more interesting to note that this is being put down to ‘the fruit of the continuous and professional work performed by members of the Local Police in Nerja’.
I say interesting because this year, unlike in almost every year gone by, there seemed to be far less of a police presence on the streets of Nerja. It was always the case, for example, that certain spots, such as the junction of avenida Castilla Perez and calle Diputación, had an almost permanent police presence of between two and four officers to monitor traffic and stop (illegal) parking in the taxi rank outside the chemist.
Not this year. A few times, maybe, particularly when the Local Police got their new pda’s.
While the police may be doing a grand job, it seems unlikely that this would affect the number of road accidents. More likely to be other factors, such as people driving more carefully – or less people bringing their cars because there is nowhere to park any more!
The ‘crash helmet’ law has now been in force for a long time and it is only natural that wearing a helmet has become a normal habit for most people and there are bound to be less offenders.
I have noticed recently that there are a lot of the ‘towed’ stickers on the streets where the parking suddenly changes from one side of the street to the other on a particular day/night of the month. Not terribly relevant, just thought I’d mention it.
Of course, if the authorities want the figures to drop even more dramatically or even to zero for most types of ‘crime’, all they have to do is stop the police patrols all together.
