The Málaga Metro will not now be officially inaugurated on November 11th 2011 (11/11/11) as originally planned but will open in February 2013 instead.
The entire Metro project is currently set to require a total investment of €760 million and about fifty percent of the construction work has already started and is apparently on schedule.
The original idea was to open a 6.7 kilometre stretch on the symbolic date of 11/11/11, but the authorities have now decided against this idea as it would not be economically viable and would actually cost them a lot of money, which they don’t have.
The view now is that a single stretch, without any interconnectivity, does not really serve much purpose and would be under utilised. The authorities would now rather wait until the Metro has the functionality to connect the Palacio de Deportes Martín Carpena with Universidad via Vialia, and this won’t be until 2013.
In addition, opening the section now with a small number of potential users would lead to unnecessary degradation.
