The number of divorces increased by 4.7% in 2010 while separations decreased by 5.6% according to the National Institute for Statistics (INE).
In 2010, there were 110,321 marriages dissolved, 102,933 by divorce, 7,248 separations and 140 annulments. The greatest number of break-ups occurred in the age range 40 to 49 years.
The average duration of dissolved marriages was 15.5 years and three out of four were settled within six months of the beginning of proceedings.
The regions with the highest break-up rate per 1,000 population were Cataluña (2,78), Canarias (2,72) and Ceuta (2,73). At the other end of the scale were Castilla y León (1,73), Extremadura (1,76) and Castilla-La Mancha (1,82).
