The Councillor for Agriculture has filed a motion to be debated at the next plenary session of the Council to ask the Ministry of Agriculture of the Junta de Andalucia to institute controls on fruit and other horticultural products to ensure that items entering stores or cooperatives from the campo are not the proceeds of theft.
The Councillor is also requesting increased Guardia Civil monitoring of markets and other points of sale for horticultural products.
There has apparently been an increase in thefts of produce, particularly avocados and mangoes, in the area and some farmers are seeing their whole year’s efforts disappearing overnight and are considering whether to continue or not.
