Nerja and the Provincial Fire Consortium

The Council is set to debate a motion requesting the Provincial Fire Consortium to demand payment of debts incurred by some municipalities, reported as being €8,399,956.10, and if payment is not forthcoming, to handle the matter via the Inland Revenue through the withholding of payments in advance or on account.

At first sight, one would imagine that the authorities would have better ways of spending their time, possibly hours, debating such motions, which occur regularly, or more important matters to attend to.

On this occasion, though, it does make some sense, although whether such a request will actually achieve any sort of result is an entirely different matter. Unlikely.

The proposed new Fire Park in Nerja should have long since been completed and operational, but it hasn’t even been started. There were initial delays relating to location and the site was changed several times but does now appear to be settled.

One of the latest reasons given for not getting on with the project is a lack of funds, due in part to some municipalities not paying their dues. If those authorities paid up, perhaps money would be available to start work on the Fire Park.

This would then bring revenue to Nerja via all the various building and licence fees as well as providing a modern Fire Park serving a wide area.

But don’t hold your breath. It is unlikely that the Provincial Fire Consortium will be terribly impressed by someone else trying to tell them how to run their organisation.
