Denmark has introduced what is believed to be the world’s first tax on fat. That’s a surcharge on foods that are high in saturated fat as opposed to any other thoughts that may have sprung to mind.
Items such as milk, butter, meat, oils, pizza and processed foods containing more than 2.3% saturated fat will be subject to a surcharge. Some scientists disagree with this approach, saying that it would make more sense to tackle salt, sugar and refined carbohydrates as these are more detrimental to health.
Some Danes have begun hoarding foodstuffs and although the Danish government hopes that the surcharge will help reduce the intake of saturated fat, many think the Danes will just shop abroad instead.
