The Director General of Security of the Canary Islands, Juan Manuel Santana, has raised the alert status in La Restinga on the island of El Hierro as seismic signals indicate the possibility of an eruption closer to shore and at a shallower depth than the one that occurred on Monday.
The raising of the alert status to ‘red’ is a precautionary measure as an eruption in shallower water would lead to a higher risk to people in the area. Residents of La Restinga are being evacuated.
