A 30 year old Portuguese national was arrested this morning in Avilés, Asturias, for allegedly killing his 29 year old girlfriend.
The man was in a bar and was acting nervously and saying that he thought he might have killed his girlfriend. A barmen who knew the man and where he lived called the police.
Police went round to the couple’s home in calle del Palacio Valdés where they were greeted by the Portuguese man who said that he and his girlfriend had been arguing and that she was still in bed. Police entered the bedroom and found the woman lying on the bed and with wounds to the face and head. The woman displayed no signs of life.
The police arrested the alleged perpetrator who offered strong resistance.
The detainee has a prior criminal record although not for gender violence. He was, however, the subject of a complaint relating to a former partner but the case was dismissed.
This brings the total of domestic fatalities so far this year to 51, five less than during the same period in 2010.
