A councillor for Masquefa, Barcelona, has been arrested after allegedly driving into and injuring two people who had removed a Spanish flag from outside the Town Hall.
Councillor Juan José García Mora had placed a Spanish flag on some railings in front of the Town Hall building. A local resident then apparently removed the flag while talking to another person.
According to witnesses, Juan José García Mora was sitting in his van and when the flag was removed, started up his vehicle, mounted the pavement and rammed the two people. Not content with this, the Councillor then got out of his van, picked up the flagpole and tried to attack the injured people.
Other local residents intervened and subdued the Councillor, an act which probably preventing more serious injuries. García Mora was then arrested by Local Police officers.
In an extraordinary plenary session the Council agreed to charge the Councillor and take steps to have him disqualified from public office.
Juan José García Mora has, in the recent past, been denounced by the Local Government for repeated insults and threats against members of the government team during plenary sessions. Indeed, he has apparently been expelled from the last three plenary sessions due to safety concerns and on the last two occasions the Local Police have had to be called in to the meetings.
