The underwater volcanic eruptions south of the island of El Hierro which began on Monday have resulted in the appearance of two clearly visible green slicks about two kilometres long.
The eruption that began last Monday has so far output two pockets of magma southwest of La Restinga. The first eruption occurred 3 kilometres offshore at a depth of 750 metres beneath the sea and the second was just over 2 kilometres offshore at a depth of 500 metres under the sea.
The slicks have the characteristic smell of sulphur. Scientists are now carrying out seismic studies in the area.
