According to the Mayor of Nerja, José Alberto Armijo, the bidding process for the sewage treatment plant has once again been halted, this time due to economic and budgetary problems facing the central government.
Having heard no news on the project, the Mayor held a meeting with the Dirección General de Aguas, at which time he was informed that the project has once again stalled.
The Mayor has requested an urgent meeting with the Minister of Environment, Rosa Aguilar, to discuss the matter. Whilst appreciating that Rosa Aguilar is currently preoccupied in Brussels defending the Spanish interests, the Mayor believes she should make time for such an important project, especially as the Minister has previously declared herself to be directly and personally committed to the project.
In May, coincidentally just before the municipal elections, it was announced that the bidding process, which would take three months, would start shortly and building work would begin this year.
In July it was announced that more information on the project would be forthcoming in October as it had not even been decided whether the project would be put out to private tender or would be carried out by Tragsa, a dependent company of the Ministry of Environment.
And now it’s mid-October and it would appear that the project has once again been shelved. One can see little hope of the work starting this year, particularly with a general election looming, although one might suddenly have a few more ‘promises’ or another ‘declaration of commitment’ in the run-up to the election.
