José Padial, the first man to photograph the Nerja Caves on April 19th 1959, has died at the age of 78 years after a short illness.
The career of José Padial has always been closely linked to the Nerja Caves and during the past fifty years he has photographed the interior of the Caves more than anyone else. His very first photos were taken on April 19th 1959, immediately after the Caves were discovered, and were published in the newspaper Sur three days later.
In 2009 a monument in his honour was constructed in the square by the entrance to the Nerja Caves.
The funeral takes place today at 17:30 at the Iglesia El Salvador on the Balcón de Europa.
