A pinch and a punch, white rabbits and a gloriously sunny day as we begin November, what more could one ask? A sewage plant would be nice, of course, but one must remain within the bounds of reality and not venture into cloud cuckoo land.
With the general election coming up, nothing is likely to happen on the sewage plant front except maybe a few more election promises.
The new toll motorway from Las Pedrizas to Madrid has opened, cutting the journey time between the capital and the Costa del Sol by one hour, although you have to pay for the privilege. Will it attract more visitors to the Costa del Sol or just get the regular visitors there just that bit quicker? That project ended up costing over €400 million, that’s the equivalent of 10 sewage plants.
Then there is the airport extension, costing hundreds of millions, to attract more tourists to the Costa del Sol yet it is like inviting everyone to a holiday complex where not all the chalets are equipped with a bathroom.
As this situation has been going on now for four decades there must surely be more to the problem than meets the eye as it spans several governments of different political hues. Not that we are ever likely to find out the real reasons why such an important, or absolutely essential, facility has constantly been put off until mañana, of course.
When you see the vast amounts of money spend on less important, even seemingly frivolous, projects, endless meetings to approve or commit to the bleeding obvious, military intervention, supplying rebels with an airforce, it makes one wonder. Unfortunately, though, it is the same the world over.
