Trial starts of man accused of killing Cecilia Coria

The man accused of killing Cecilia Coria on the Balcon de Europa on September 28th 2008 has been in court and has apologised for the killing and asked for forgiveness from the family.

The accused, a Moroccan national and former boyfriend of Cecilia Coria, accepted responsibility for the crime but said there were some aspects he didn’t remember.

He admitted to sending threatening text messages and phone calls and admitted leaving a voice message saying he was going to kill her. The defendant also acknowledged that, hours before the murder, he told a friend he was planning to kill his girlfriend.

On the day of the murder, the defendant testified that picked up a large kitchen knife and left home with the intentional of killing the girl. He then proceeded to the Balcon de Europa where he stabbed his former girlfriend at least eighteen times while she lay defenceless on her back.

The defendant, however, said he was unaware that he had breached a restraining order.

The prosecution is demanding a long jail sentence and is asking that any sentence be served outside Spain or, if served in Spain, the defendant be expelled from the country once the sentence is completed. The prosecutor added that, in view of the history of abuse and violence, it was his opinion that the defendant should have already been deported before the fateful day.
