The prosecutor for the Ministry of Environment in Andalucia is investigating the appearance of predatory catfish in the reservoir at Iznázar, Córdoba province.
The catfish is the largest fresh water fish on the continent and can reach weights exceeding 100 kilos and lengths of two metres. It is fiercely predatory and poses a threat to the local environment.
Officials are also worried in case the catfish gets into the mouth of the rio Guadalquivir and want to take every measure possible to avoid this happening.
Officials believe the catfish was introduced illegally, either deliberately or by accident. Fishermen who catch one of these fish are obliged to eliminate it and inform the Ministry of Environment.
