Día de los gitanos andaluces

Today, Tuesday November 22nd, is the ‘Día de los gitanos andaluces’ – Day of the Andalucian Gypsy.

This is the fifteenth year of this particular celebration and the gypsy flag, blue and green with a red wheel in the centre symbolising the desire for freedom and to move beyond the borders, will be fluttering in the breeze above the Andalucian parliament building.

The celebration commemorates the arrival of the first gypsies in Spain some 549 years ago, in Jaén to be precise.

There are around 300,000 gypsies in Andalucia with as many as one-third being at risk from social exclusion.
