The Councillor for Popular Traditions in Vélez-Málaga, Jesús Lupiáñez, has decided to cancel the traditional end of year celebrations as a cost saving measure.
The Councillor justified the action by saying that only 200 people took part in the New Year celebrations in 2010.
In the meantime, the Councillor announced that the public lighting over the festive period will be extended and will now be from December 9th to January 6th 2012, the idea being to attract more visitors to the town. Although the period has been extended, the actual hours of lighting will be reduced. On major days the lights will be on until 03:00 but on normal work days only from 18:30 to 21:30.
