Five people suffered serious burns after an explosion and fire this morning at a hotel on Playa de Mogán, Gran Canaria.
At around 09:00, a propane gas leak while a truck was being unloaded caused an explosion and fire at the hotel and causing part of the roof of the spa to collapse. National Police, Red Cross, Local Police, Canary Island Police, Guardia Civil and three Fire Brigade units took part in extinguishing the fire and tending the injured while a forward medical command post was set up on the local football field.
Ambulances and helicopters were also on hand to transfer the wounded to hospital once their condition had been assessed and stabilised.
The injured all have serious burns.
