The secretary general of the Junta de Andalucia, Rosa María Castillejo, has written to the mayor of Vélez-Málaga, Francisco Delgado Bonilla, informing him that there will be no financial aid forthcoming for the tram system in the municipality, adding that the operating costs of such systems are a local matter.
Rosa María Castillejo stated that there is no budget provision for 2011 for subsidising tram systems and there will be none in 2012, adding that any financial aid would be unfair on other cities operating tram systems.
The secretary general has offered the assistance of the Department of Transport to study a possible reorganization of bus routes and thus increase the number of tram users in order to increase revenue.
The mayor of Vélez-Málaga says the tram system is not economically viable and keeps threatening to suspend the service.
