This year’s olive harvest in the Serrania de Ronda is expected to be down by almost one million kilos this year, a drop of around 15%. This contrasts with the rest of Málaga province where yields are expected to be in the region of 65,000 tons, 11,000 tons more than in 2010.
In the Serrania de Ronda, the harvest has been affected by the weather. In September and October there was hardly any rain, not good, and the recent November rains have meant that the olives have been swollen by water and will therefore yield less oil, also not good.
Another factor affecting the harvest in Ronda is apparently the concern among farmers about an increase in official work inspections and most of the farms are small and family run. However, the inspections in the Serrania de Ronda are currently not being carried out with the same vigour as in other areas, such as around C’adiz.
