Saturday was the inauguration of the new sewage treatment system in Villanueva del Rosario, built at a cost of €2.5 million.
The plant takes into account further growth of the community, currently 3,300 residents, with a capacity to account for the needs of around 4,500 inhabitants.
The inauguration ceremony was attended by, amongst others, the Minister of Environment, Jose Juan Diaz Trillo, the delegate of the Andalucian government, Remedios Martel, the provincial delegate, Francisco Fernández España, and the mayor of Villanueva del Rosario. José Antonio González.
The Minister explained that other works are planned for 2012 or are already in progress, such as the renewal of the sewage plant in Villanueva del Trabuco as the current facility is obsolete, and the construction of sewage facilities in Villanueva de Algaidas, Cuevas de San Marcos, Cuevas del Becerro, Colmenar and Teba.

I cannot believe after all the hype, that a decision has not been made to construct a sewage plant in Nerja.
As we approach the turn of another year my thoughts usually turn to the new booking of a Nerja summer holiday.
I would really like to see the end of the brown sludge that blights the coastline along the balcon during the summer months.
I know times are difficult for all, but this is a high priority project that can only benefit the local community and tourists alike.
Only time will tell?

As a regular visitor to Nerja from England for the last 35 years, I know that Nerja will never get a sewage plant or a marina,or clamp down on local dog owners filling every street with dog poo, as the local authoritys, nor the local people give a damn about the environment or the tourists .
smelly streets filthy sea, nobody cares. I will not be back again.
